Jothydev’s Diabetes Research Centre is the first centre (1997) to introduce telemedicine in diabetes care as a cost effective tool to achieve and maintain all targets in comprehensive therapy. Poorly controlled diabetes may result in disabling complications and exorbitant increase in treatment cost. Majority of patients hardly reach goals of therapy; the common reasons being inadequate dosages due to fear of hypoglycemia, lack of awareness on diabetes, discontinuation of drugs meant for prevention of long term complications, wrong timing and techniques, lack of exercise etc.
These limitations can be effectively overcome if the patients are continuously interacting with the diabetes management team, attend sessions on diabetes education, clearing their doubts and voicing their concerns on various aspects of diabetes treatment. A modality which can save time and cost for the patient along with discussions on diet, exercise and other lifestyles thereby achieving the goals of therapy with minimal or no risk of hypoglycemia are the benefits of Diabetes Tele Management System (DTMS®) in vogue at our centre since 1997.
Dr.Jothydev Kesavadev initially introduced this as a pilot programme in 1996 and scaled it up over the years with profound evidence on safely attaining individualized targets in therapy and preventing future complications of diabetes.

The tele follow up based on the (DTMS®) comprises of a multi-disciplinary team of doctors, dietitians, diabetes educators, nurse educators, pharmacists and psychologists/ counsellors. Each DTMS® consultation thus offers an opportunity for education and counselling as well. The periodicity of Self-Monitoring of Blood Glucose (SMBG) varies, depending on clinical status and stage of the disease.
The cost effectiveness and benefits of DTMS® have been presented and published and is now globally recognized. Only those patients registering with the Comprehensive Diabetes Management are eligible for availing the DTMS® facility.
